What schools offer the proper courses for an aspiring photographer?

My dream is to become a photographer , and I am not yet out of high school , but I want to get started looking at schools that I can get the proper courses for being a photographer. I was wondering if anyone knew of any specific schools that specialize in photography. Along with that , what are some courses I will have to take ? All answers appreciated (: Thanks!

  1. BYU-Provo and BYU-Idaho both have BA and BFA programs for photography. I have not had much experience w/ graduates from BYU-Provo, but have used many graduates from BYU-Idaho for family portraits. They do a great job.
  2. There are a whole bunch of them. Check out some of these. Brooks Institute (CA) RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) in NY Art Center in CA Hallmark Institute of Photography in MA New England School of Photography in MA The Art Institute of Boston in MA Most art schools will also have a program in photography.
  3. western ky university has a fantastic photojournalism program
  4. Utah State has a great photo program for art and commercial photography. They are one of the few programs in the country teaching 19th century processes. If you are interested in journalistic photography they have additional classes in the journalism department. Utah State is somewhat conservative but you would have more freedom in the USU photo department than at nearby BYU, mentioned previously.
  5. You probably need to do some of this research on your own. There are many schools that have a photography program. You're getting some of the more well know schools, but a number of state universities or junior colleges have great programs as well. What are of the country are you from?
  6. Proper is a relative term. I'm a professional photographer and have never taken a high school or college course on photography. I'm completely self taught. Photography does not require a degree or certificate to be able to work in the industry. However, the important thing is understanding and being able to apply the basic photographic principles, knowing composition and making yourself marketable. If college is the way you decide to do that, then just about any college that has a photography course should serve you well.
