What can I major in to become an elementary school teacher?

Hi. I am a freshman at a liberal arts college and want to become an elementary school teacher. My school offers an education certification program, but I have to pick a major. They have human development, but I am really not interested in it. If I choose to major in something like biology or french, will that make me a less qualified candidate to get a job as a teacher. I just DO not enjoy human development as much as others in the course do. But I still want to become an elementary school teacher.

  1. go to the states government website, and look at what they require for teaching credentials. for california, http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/teach-elementary.html
  2. my advice on becoming a teacher.... DON'T if i had it to do all over again, i would have chosen something else in college. hindsight is 20/20
  3. I agree with answerer #2, I hate to be so negative, but teaching elem is a very very very stressful and hard job. I am a retired teacher and I would never choose it again. The idea of it is GREAT, but actually dealing with the students these days is hard, But if you are determined and want to do it, I would still say go with your subjects you like. If you are meant to be a teacher, then it will shine through, very much, when you are interviewing and so much depends on what the economy is like when you graduate and what area you want to live in. I live in Oregon, and if a person wants to get a job in our best city, . Portland Or, they have to like sub for 3 years, and won't be considered for a full time position before that, but I live in a small Oregon town and here it is " who you know". So I am trying to say ...... a lot depends on where you will teach and how many teaching jobs are open at the time . good luck if you decide to do it, ;)
  4. well check with your state regulations. you can also look for another school to offers more choices that you would like.
  5. Normally liberal arts would be a good major for that but I think you can pretty much major in anything just as long as you meet the requirements to be a teacher in the state that you live in
  6. Pick a Major?? never heard of such a thing. If you a going to apply to an elementary ed program, your major would be elementary education. In my state was also had to have a minor so we could obtain an endorsement area. Biology and French would be more helpful if you were going into secondary education.
  7. major in elementary education.
